The King’s College community is mourning the tragic loss of Harrison Cole, Assisting Organist at King’s College, whose death has left colleagues, students, musicians, and friends deeply saddened. Remembered as an exceptionally gifted musician and a dedicated member of the college’s musical life, Harrison’s passing marks the loss of a bright talent whose future held tremendous promise.
Harrison’s musical journey began at Ipswich School, where he was a music scholar and quickly distinguished himself through his remarkable abilities. During his school years, he spent three years studying at the Junior Department of the Royal Academy of Music, developing the skills and artistry that would define his career. Following a gap-year organ scholarship at Wells Cathedral, he continued his studies at Trinity College, Cambridge, where he served as Organ Scholar beginning in 2019.
After graduating from Cambridge, Harrison spent a year as Assistant Organist at Gonville and Caius College before joining King’s College in September 2024 as Assisting Organist. During his time at King’s, he made a significant contribution to the world-renowned Choir, accompanying recordings, broadcasts, and international tours. His musical excellence was showcased during two Festivals of Nine Lessons and Carols, as well as tours to Australia, Estonia, the United States, and Canada.
Harrison was preparing for an exciting new chapter in his career. He had recently been appointed to assistantships at St Paul’s Knightsbridge and St Michael’s Cornhill, two prestigious London institutions that would have provided a foundation for his growing career as a pianist, organist, conductor, and freelance musician.
The loss has been felt profoundly throughout the college. Provost Gillian Tett noted that the entire King’s College community, particularly the Choir and Chapel teams, has been deeply affected by the news. Their thoughts remain with Harrison’s family, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time.
Though his life was tragically cut short, Harrison Cole’s extraordinary talent, dedication to music, and lasting contributions to sacred and choral music will be remembered with admiration and gratitude for years to come.
